  1. What’s really impressive about this art form has to do with the constant vigilance the artist must exert in order to keep the appropriately carved fingernail in good form for this sort of thing. Most people don’t know about that. It takes a lot of discipline.

    Using the nail of the pinky finger of the non-dominant hand is considered most advanced. Some of the most advanced Oreo carvers (or, for the orthodox, “Hydrox” carvers”) even go so far as to have more than one carving tool cut into the fingernail, often angling away from each other. This enables the artist to put the cookie on a Lazy Susan and then whirl it around while simultaneously darting back and forth with the carved fingernail bits, thus creating intriguing and occasionally disturbing patterns in the icing.
